More than a century ago, 110 Black soldiers were convicted of murder, mutiny and other crimes at three military trials held at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. Nineteen were hanged, including 13 on a single day, Dec. 11, 1917, in the largest mass execution of American soldiers by the Army. The soldiers’ families spent decades fighting to show that the men had been betrayed by the military. In November, they won a measure of justice when the Army secretary, Christine E. Wormuth, overturned the convictions and acknowledged that the soldiers “were wrongly treated because of their race and were not given fair trials.”On Thursday, several descendants of the soldiers gathered at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery as the Department of Veterans Affairs dedicated new headstones for 17 of the executed servicemen.

Nearly four out of five college students aren't really using dating apps, according to a survey. Axios and Generation Lab polled 978 college students in the US to learn about their dating habits. The survey found that a majority of college students are not on dating apps. The most commonly used dating app for students is Tinder, with 12% of college students using it at least once a month. She said that using dating apps was more likely to just end in hookups.

Travis T. King, the American soldier who returned to the United States last month after crossing into North Korea in July, has been charged in military court with multiple offenses, including desertion, assaulting other soldiers and child pornography. Private King, 23, is being held at a civilian jail just outside Fort Bliss, near El Paso, according to a family spokesman. He was moved there from Fort Sam Houston, near San Antonio, where he had been undergoing reintegration procedures. The charges were filed on Sunday by officials at Fort Bliss. Private King was made aware of them on Wednesday, the family spokesman said.

CNN —US Army Private Travis King arrived back on United States soil Thursday after being returned to American custody weeks after he crossed into North Korea, a Defense Department official said. Real wages have grown on an annual basis over the last two months for the first time in 26 months. The US also leads the G7 countries in GDP growth and one measure of inflation. Real wages in the US were 5.8% higher in 2022 compared with 2019, followed by Canada at 4.7%. The other G7 countries were all in the negatives for this time period. Other European countries including Spain and Greece have also seen real wages fall, according to the OECD.

June 9 (Reuters) - The White House on Friday said electric-vehicle charging stations using Tesla (TSLA.O) standard plugs would be eligible for billions of dollars in federal subsidies as long as they included the U.S. charging standard connection, CCS, as well. Tesla shares rose as much as 7.5% on Friday but pared gains to close 4.1% higher at $244.40. Analysts said the Ford and GM news was a big win that could make Tesla Superchargers an industry standard in the United States. GM and Ford shares closed up 1.1% and 1.3%, respectively. Musk on Friday said in a tweet it would be "ideal" for Tesla chargers to need only CCS adapters to meet federal charging standards.

Washington, DC CNN —The United States could default on its debt in less than two weeks, and cities with a large military presence risk an economic firestorm if lawmakers don’t act. About a sixth of government spending goes toward national defense, a quarter of which is to pay military personnel, according to the Congressional Budget Office. If the United States can’t pay its national defense bills, cities with large military bases face a potentially massive fallout, encompassing missed payments, rising debt and a significant pullback in spending that would cut into local businesses’ bottom lines. That could further damage local economies grappling with financial market turbulence that could unfold even ahead of a possible default. Federal workers could get stuck pulling from their savings accounts or relying on credit to make everyday purchases, Mayo said.

CNN —Taylor Swift fans have rallied in support of a fellow fan who was killed early Saturday after leaving Swift’s Houston concert. Jacob Lewis, 20, was hit and killed by a drunken driver after The Eras Tour show at NRG Stadium in Houston on Friday night. Karyn and Steve Lewis, Jacob’s parents, told CNN that the money donated will go toward a scholarship for theater students in the Katy, Texas, area. “If we could have him back that would be our choice but that’s not an option so we need to move forward and do what we can do to support others,” Steve told CNN. “We’ve gotten support from people who don’t even know us and now we’re able to honor him in a special way,” Steve said.

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) will open part of its U.S. charging network to electric vehicles (EVs) made by rivals as part of a $7.5 billion federal program to electrify the nation's highways to cut carbon emissions, the Biden administration said on Wednesday. There are also nearly 10,000 "destination" chargers with Tesla plugs that can recharge a vehicle overnight. Opening up access to Tesla's network would be a quick win for an ambitious federal program to build 500,000 EV chargers by 2030, up from 130,000 currently. Administration officials did not say whether a contract has been signed, but federal officials will control disbursement of about a third of the $7.5 billion federal program. Chris Harto, a senior policy analyst at Consumer Reports, said, "There is no doubt the $7.5 billion in federal charging investment threatens Tesla's competitive advantage.

Brittney Griner is getting mental healthcare at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. A White House official said Griner is working on her "reintegration back into American society." Griner was serving a 9-year sentence in Russia until the US agreed to a prisoner swap last week. After nine months in Russian custody, Griner touched down in San Antonio, Texas early Friday morning. Griner was detained in Moscow in February after officials said she had cannabis oil in her luggage.
